Suspects nabbed for various thefts

Western Cape: On 2018-09-17 at 17:30 Diep River SAPS thwarted an alleged syndicate of thieves exiting a local shopping mall in Gabriel Road, Plumstead for recent thefts and possession of stolen goods.

Through the use of several community-based partnerships in the fight against crime, such as the LPR (Licence-Plate Recognition) system, twenty-four hour community control room, neighbourhood watch patrollers, and SAPS, were able to locate a suspicious dark grey sedan after it was allegedly involved with recent thefts throughout the northern and southern suburbs over the past few months.

It is alleged that two female suspects, aged 37 and 46 years of age, used a vehicle at local shopping malls in and around various suburbs. The suspects would then, whilst one is doing general shopping, either steal personal belongings from the consumer or goods from the respective store and leave without payment, whilst the other pushed the trolley and kept a lookout for cameras and security guards.

The coupling were stopped dead in their tracks as they were leaving after being suspected of having committed theft at one of the local stores in the mall. The suspects were found with home-made devices to deflect metal detectors at the exit points of the store as well as various food consumables that could not be accounted for by means of proof of purchase.

The members then proceeded to the alleged suspect’s vehicle the coupling came in and found food and clothing items from other nearby shopping centres that also could not be accounted for by means of proof of purchase. Through the members’ immediate back-to-basics approach and investigation, video footage from the respective nearby stores showed several of the items having been allegedly stolen today by the same suspects. The management of these stores were traced and notified immediately and case dockets were registered.

It was also found that one of the two suspects above, are wanted on an outstanding warrant of arrest in Johannesburg.

The suspects will be charged for Theft and Possession of Stolen Goods and will appear in the Wynberg Magistrate Court soon. Investigations continue in possible linkages to other malls in the Province. Diep River SAPS Management thanks all those who continue to strive to a crime-free South Africa by squeezing the space for criminals to zero
