IMMEDIATE MEDIA RELEASE – Wednesday 7th November 2018
SQUEEZING THE SPACE FOR CRIMINALS
Western Cape: On Tuesday 2018-11-06 at about 11:45 Diep River SAPS made several arrests through the use of crime-fighting technology such as the LPR (Licence Plate Recognition) and community partnerships.
A local SSP (Security Service Provider) had called in a metallic silver sedan vehicle driving suspiciously down Main Road, Diep River. Diep River SAPS were alerted to the movements of the vehicle and attempted to stop the vehicle with the assistance of neighbouring SAPS stations.
The vehicle in question refused to pull over for the members and proceeded to speed off. Several shots were fired between the suspects and the police in an attempt to evade the members. The chase ended shortly after the suspects collided with another SAPS vehicle in front of a local residence in Rhynheath and Edgemere Road, Elfindale.
Further investigation lead to the vehicle the suspects were driving, had allegedly been stolen in the Lansdowne area a few months ago. A 9mm handgun and several rounds of ammunition was also found and recovered inside the motor vehicle. It is alleged the firearm was stolen from a residence in the Tableview Area.
A total of five (5) male suspects, aged between 21 and 26 years, were arrested on scene. Charges of Possession of Stolen Motor Vehicle, Illegal Possession of Firearm, and Illegal Possession of Ammunition were opened against the suspects. Possible further charges and linkages are underway. The suspects will appear at the Wynberg Magistrates Court soon.
Diep River SAPS Management would like to give a special thanks to CVIC – the Constantia Valley Information Centre Control Room, BH Security and neighbouring SAPS stations for their support. Diep River SAPS continues to squeeze-the-space for criminal elements in its community.
